What is acoustic foam?
Acoustic foam is a specialist type of cellular polyurethane foam used for soundproofing. It works by reducing sound waves in motion, which we hear as noise. This open celled foam absorbs sound waves to ensure they do not continue to travel.
Acoustic foam reduces sound reflection, reverberation and echoes, meaning it helps to dampen or prevent noise entirely. Sound typically bounces off hard and smooth surfaces. That’s why sound is dampened in a living room full of furniture, compared to an open hall with wooden floors.
Sound is complicated, which means that different types of acoustic foam are available to either manipulate or block sound depending on the intended outcome. For more information on how acoustic foam works, read this beginner’s guide.
What type of foam do I need for home sound insulation?
For general home sound insulation, self-adhesive flat panels will suffice. Regular acoustic foam is fine if you are looking to line walls and other flat surfaces.
What is Pyrosorb-S™ Class 0 acoustic foam?
Pyrosorb-S™ Class 0 is a fire-proof type of acoustic foam used in applications where there is a high risk of fire, such as in boiler or generator rooms. This type of foam is suited to a range of industrial applications, such as in dyno chambers, rather than in the home.
What is convoluted foam?
Convoluted acoustic foam is identical to regular flat acoustic foam, although it is in an ‘egg crate’ or pyramid pattern. This type of acoustic foam is designed to absorb more sound than its flat acoustic foam counterpart.
Do I need both flat and convoluted foam panels?
Not necessarily, but we do sell these together in one package of 24 panels. Some prefer to use convoluted foam panels on ceilings and flat panels on walls, for example.
What is a bass trap?
A bass trap is a large corner acoustic foam piece designed to absorb low frequency sound brought by standing sound waves within a room. Low frequency sound typically builds up in corners of a room, hence their placement.
In recording studios, for example, bass traps stop these low level frequencies interfering with one another, which leads to a far clearer sound recording experience.
What’s the best foam for improving recording quality?
For professional recording settings, the sonic acoustics professional range is best suited. This type of acoustic foam complies with UL94 HF1 classification which confirms its fireproof status. This type of acoustic foam helps to improve sound quality and reduces reverberation within a recording space, and is the highest quality acoustic foam on offer.
How thick do soundproofing panels need to be?
The thickness of your acoustic foam panels depends on the intended application. A thicker foam is best suited for areas where a range of high, mid and low frequency sounds need to be absorbed. Thinner foams, like our 1 inch option, are suited for DIY applications in the home and beyond, such as in a home studio or home cinema room, or in other settings like rehearsal spaces or vocal booths.
